Urogynecology

Urogynecology is a specialized branch of gynecology that focuses on diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders in women. This field merges urology and gynecology to address conditions affecting the pelvic organs, including the muscles, ligaments, and tissues that support the bladder, uterus, and rectum. By concentrating on these structures, urogynecology provides targeted care for issues like incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, offering specialized solutions for women’s health.

Symptoms Treated

Symptoms treated include:

  • Urinary Incontinence: Involuntary leakage of urine during activities like coughing or due to sudden urgency.
  • Fecal Incontinence: Accidental bowel leakage, with or without awareness.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse: The descent of pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, into the vaginal canal.
  • Interstitial Cystitis: A condition causing burning, pressure, and pain in the bladder, along with urinary urgency and frequency.
  • Overactive Bladder: Frequent urination, often accompanied by a sudden urge to go.

Common Causes

Pelvic floor disorders can result from a variety of factors, including childbirth, aging, obesity, and chronic constipation. Additional contributors may include genetic predisposition, neurological conditions, and high-impact activities, all of which can affect the strength and function of the pelvic floor muscles. These factors often combine to cause issues that impact a woman’s pelvic health.

When to Seek Help

If you experience persistent symptoms like pelvic pain or changes in bladder and bowel habits, it’s important to seek help. After childbirth, address concerns such as urinary incontinence promptly. During menopause, consult a healthcare provider for any new or worsening pelvic symptoms. If pelvic floor issues are affecting your quality of life, relationships, or work, professional assistance is essential. Additionally, any post-surgery discomfort or issues following high-impact activities should not be overlooked. For general concerns about pelvic health or preventive measures, consult with a healthcare professional. Remember, seeking help early can lead to more effective and less invasive treatments. If you have questions or doubts about your pelvic floor health, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider or urogynecologist.
